Week 2 Game Review

FINAL SCORE: BEAVERS 26 VS COUGARS 15

BEAVERS (2-0) COUGARS (0-2)

Gubei Field — Midfielder Alex Spang (9G, 3A) and the Beavers continued their assault on the Cougars, capping a decisive (albeit inconsequential) win to finish off the 2016 spring preseason. Despite the Beavers 9-goal margin of victory, the game remained within reach for the Cougars until the final minutes.

The Beavers’ midfield continues to be the crucial difference in their first two wins as the offense once again relied on multiple scorers. Led by Spang, midfielders Michael Zanner (4G), Chris Rohrer (4G), and Jake Goodwin (4G) also tallied multiple unassisted goals.  Although suffering a hamstring injury the previous week, Beavers attackman Sean Pearce (4G, 1A) posted another strong outing.

Despite the loss, the Cougars continue to improve with the return of key players—some old, some new, and some both. Zach Goodnough (2G) provided a much needed compliment to Mark Collins (2G, 3A) at midfield as the group welcomed the arrival of Japanese midfielder Hirotaka Oyama (1A) to the team. Attackman Matt Dixson (6G, 1A) also continues to slowly return to form, tallying a Shanghai personal best with 7 points, while stalwart Mike Elefante (4G) posted his second consecutive 4+ goal game.

Both teams now look poised to make a splash at next Saturday’s game (and the ensuing season opener party).
